Awstats

I’ve just seen a question on a popular forum, asking where people get their detailed statistics about web visitors to their site.

It occurred to me that many people may not be aware that most good hosting accounts usually come with some kind of stats package. Used properly, it can give you all kinds of valuable information about how your site is doing, what you might do to improve it and what’s working well.

For anyone wanting to improve their site, or blog, that’s fantastic information.

I’ve created a very short video to show how to get to the stats package if you have CPanel. CPanel is available on so many different hosting packages that there’s a good chance you’ll have it on yours.

  1. [...] Frank recently did a mini survey with his visitors to find out what they thought was most important in running an online business. The result surprised me, when “tracking” came out on top but now I am a convert. Even simple stats that you get from the Awstats on the c panel of your server will allow you to see the pages on your website that are attracting visitors. Here is a neat little video. [...]

  2. I was surprised at Frank’s results, too, John.

I suppose testing and tracking should be an obvious thing that people need to know about, but over the years traffic generation has always seemed the ‘obvious’ topic of interest.

Personally, I use a tracking script I installed on my sites as well as the AWStats on my Cpanel and I find the combination very powerful. Knowing who’s visiting, where from, when, how often and why is a pretty good base of information. With that information you can offer more of what your visitors want and perhaps re-work what they don’t want.

I’ll be honest – some of the things I’ve seen have surprised me, but I can’t argue with the numbers. In fact my most popular site is one I didn’t spend much time on. How’s that for ironic? And it’s not this site!
